Christie & Mark, thank you for your comments. Every situation is different. There are moments when it is best to not get involved, and other instances when we certainly should. A brief moment of a crying child may not warrant a restaurant owner speaking to a patron, but throwing food, a long period of disruptive behavior, or a child screaming inconsolably for 15 minutes may. As a mother, I'd be offering assistance to the family before I complained to a manager. (in a helpful and kind way) In the case of the R rated film, children under 17 can see an R rated film if accompanied by a parent/guardian. Does that make it right? Of course not; however, I am within my rights to express an opinion to anyone. If the mother chooses to react violently, then she is doing something illegal. And since I am a mother, it would be difficult for me not to get involved when it comes down to protecting a child.

Thanks for all of your responses. You are right - it is certainly the parents' responsibility to deal with an upset child, including removing them from the situation. In my experience, most parents take this responsibility seriously. I fear that a few "bad apple" parents have begun ruining the dining experience for the responsible parents. I would personally prefer that restaurants deal directly with the irresponsible parents instead of banning children all together. I tend to be beyond forgiving in most situations because I've been there - I'll share a personal experience in a future blog. As Carolyn stated above, it's what I love about Patch - having conversations and learning from others. Thanks for reading and responding! :)

Mary, I don't think there is one in Columbia. I took a look at the website and it says Charlotte/Atlanta are the closest locations. Maybe Columbia is next (or Charleston?).

I didn't have my kids with me when I went but can't wait to have more time to dive into the all that Ikea has to offer.
