Protests Scheduled for Debate Day

The nation's eyes will be fixed on South Carolina on Saturday for the Republican debate, but progressive organizers are hoping to siphon some of the attention.

As Wofford College continues to prepare for Saturday's debate between the Republican hopefuls for the presidency, at least two demonstrations are being organized to coincide with the GOP event. The debate, which Wofford officials say is the first national event of its kind ever held at the college, is expected to feature all of the GOP presidential candidates, and will begin at 8 p.m. And while the National Journal/CBS News debate will be the focus in Spartanburg this weekend, organizers of the more progressive persuasion will be doing their best to make their voices heard as well. VIDEO: 'Occupy' Movement Hits Spartanburg

Roughly 50 people lined Morgan Square in downtown Spartanburg.

Dozens of people, from teenagers to those in their 60's, protested corporate greed and Wall Street's influence in the political system Thursday, as the Occupy Wall Street movement continued to grow into the Palmetto State.

Occupy Wall Street Spreads to South Carolina

The demonstration in New York's financial district is spreading nationwide.

As the Occupy Wall Street movement continues to gain momentum in New York City, activists nationwide are working to organize similar demonstrations across the country, even in South Carolina. For almost three weeks now, protesters have gathered at Zucotti Park in Manhattan's financial district and the movement isn't showing any signs of slowing. Protesters began gathering on Sept. 17 and the group has grown day by day, despite the approximately 700 arrests made by police on the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday. Protesters are mainly gathered to demonstrate outrage over the growing disparity in wealth from the nation's richest one percent and everyone else.
