Big Boom Heard Across the Upstate

Some think it may have been a meteorite

Several media outlets in the Upstate had reports of a large boom and bright lights streaking across the sky. The boom was heard and felt in parts of Georgia, in the upstate of South Carolina and western North Carolina. According to WYFF, the National Weather Service said it began receiving calls about 2 a.m. The story said that after checking the security tapes at the National Weather service, they saw a bright light in the sky around 1:42 a.m. Spartanburg County reported receiving more than 70 calls on the incident, according to the report. On the Fox Carolina Facebook page, viewers reported the noise sounded as if something had hit their house, while others said they slept through it. WSPA's Amy Wood tweeted, "I heard it. Greenville Social Media Leader's Suicide Reverberates Across Country, World

Trey Pennington, 45, died Sunday following a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His legacy lives on.

Through the cacophony of the social web – thanks to the mainstreaming of platforms like Facebook and Twitter, which amplify the thoughts, opinions, rants and raves of virtually everyone – Trey Pennington stood out as someone who understood the importance of listening. It was just one of Trey's endearing qualities – one that, as a journalist, I try to remind myself of often. Trey, a Greenville businessman and a true thought leader in social media, was defined by his passion, his desire to help people, and his genuine ability to see – and, sometimes, bring out – the best in others. It's amazing to see all the people he touched in the comments under the news stories and blog posts that have popped up around the world.
