Billy Burch, the man investigators believe murdered Alice Owenby in February, appeared at a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
The man accused of shooting a Taylors woman to death before setting her house on fire appeared in court in Greenville on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing, Fox Carolina reported. Billy Burch, 40, was arrested on March 1 by Greenville County Sheriff's Office investigators for the Feb. 21 murder of Alice Owenby. Taylors firefighers were sent to 301 McConnell Road in response to a reported house fire there. Though firefighters initially thought the home was unoccupied, by 9 a.m., arson investigators with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office had arrived and discovered Owenby's body buried beneath several feet of rubble in the bathroom of the home. Capt. Greg Reed of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office has confirmed investigators are looking into similarities in Alice Owenby's slaying in Taylors and Frances Earle's murder in Seneca.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the Oconee County Sheriff's Office are looking into simiarities between the Feb. 21 murder of Alice Owenby and the murder of a Seneca woman in July of 2009. Alice Owenby, 63, was found dead in the burnt rubble of her 301 McConnell Road home last month in Taylors. A subsequent autopsy revealed she had been shot in the head. She was found underneath several feet of rubble in the bathroom of the home. That murder shares eery similarities with the 2009 death of Frances Earle. Earle, 74, was found in the bathtub of her 115 Brookwood Drive home in Seneca shot in the head on July 12, 2009. The 40-year-old Taylors man charged with shooting a woman to death last month is now facing several other felony charges, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office announced Friday. Billy Burch is accused of shooting 63-year-old Alice Owenby to death inside her Taylors home. On Feb. 21, Taylors firefighers responded to a fire call sent at 301 McConnell Road, and though firefighters initially thought the home was unoccupied, by 9 a.m., the Taylors Fire Department had contacted arson investigators with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office. Billy Burch arrested and charged with the murder of Alice Owenby.
A person has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of 63-year-old Alice Owenby, who was found last week in the charred rubble of her home. Billy Burch, 40, was taken into custody by the Greenvile County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals Task Force at 1005 Packs Mountain Road in northern Taylors on Thursday night, according to Jennings Autrey, public information officer with the the Sheriff's Office. Greenville County Coroner's Office said Wednesday that the 63-year-old woman found dead inside a home after a fire was already dead before her home went up in flames.
Investigators confirmed on Wednesday that Alice Barber Owenby, the 63-year-old woman found dead Tuesday morning after a fire at a Taylors residence, did not die in the fire. Lt. Tim Ridgeway of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Deputy Coroner Barry Wright advised investigators that Owenby had been shot multiple times in the head before the blaze was set. The case is now officially being investigated as a homicide. Owenby lived at 301 McConnell Road in Taylors, which was the scene of a house fire at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. This was such a senseless crime from such a sick individual. Please don't waste everyone's tax dollars anymore than absolutely necessary housing this scumbag. People like him that have no regard for human life and murder innocent people deserve the death penalty. He took away a sweet, caring, family woman; and for what?
