A late handball gave Hilton Head the only shot it needed to snatch victory in state title match.
The look on Eastside senior Mitchell Lawson's face said it all. He knew where he was standing — in the goalie box. He knew what the referee's whistle meant — the handball had been spotted. And with precious few minutes remaining in a scoreless 3A state title match, it appeared he knew what was coming next — a Chris MacMurray penalty kick would give Hilton Head a 1-0 victory and state title. Just a couple minutes after, after the final whistle but before hands have been shaken and medals or trophies had been awarded, Lawson headed to the parking lot. The Yellow Jackets spring game was held Saturday at Dooley Field.
Fans of the Greer Yellow Jackets got a sneak peek at next year's football team. Greer held its annual spring game Saturday at Dooley Field. The team has 11 starters returning for the season. The Yellow Jackets will open the 2013-14 season on the road Aug. 23 at Seneca High School. The first home game will be Aug. 30.

A steady rain moved through the area in the Saturday and the start of the third round of the BMW Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX was delayed for 30 minutes at The Thornblade Club. When the rains stopped, the stars came out. Cooler temperatures and clouds didn't deter fans from coming out to see their favorite celebrities. Hitlon Head Island has too much for the Eagles.
The Eastside girls soccer team certainly showed their heart. After 40 minutes the Eagles trailed a powerful Hilton Head Island squad by only 1-0. In the second half they battled some more, before eventually falling in the AAA Girls Soccer State Championship, 3-2 at Gilbert High School in Lexington County. The Seahawks began to pull away after halftime. Ashley Green's goal made it 2-0 in the 55th minute. Her sister Amanda had got Hilton Head on the board early in the first session with the first goal of the game. In the 60th minute, Emily Crick made it 3-0 Hilton Head and the game appeared to be out of reach. But Eastside did not give up. Eastside Girls Soccer team hopes to bring home the state 3A title Friday. The Eagles will play Hilton Head at 5 p.m. at Gilbert High School. Eastside beat Greenville Monday to secure a spot in the title game. "We just want to have a good showing and represent the Upstate," Coach Andy Robinson told Greer-Taylors Patch earlier this week. The BMW Pro-Am has released the pairings for this weekend's golf tournament. Find out where your favorite star will be in the attached .pdf. The first players will tee off at 8:30 a.m. Each professional is paired with an amateur during the first three rounds. On Sunday, all golf is played at Thornblade Club (the 16 lowest scoring pro-amateur/pro-celebrity teams advance to play Sunday’s final round).
Shane Clark will lead the Fighting Tigers this year.
Blue Ridge High School has named Shane Clark as the new head football coach. A coach for 17 years, Clark has spent the last three years as an assistant coach for the Fighting Tigers. Clark has more than 10 years as an assistant coach and seven years as a head coach. For two years, Clark worked on the defensive side of the ball and served as the offensive coordinator for the Fighting Tigers' 2012 season. Clark had been serving as interim head coach after Wade Cooper departed last month to take the defensive coordinator's job at Dorman. Clark is a former head coach at Travelers Rest.

The Eagles beat Wren 3-1 Tuesday night.
Eastside Eagles are now 3A Upper State Champions. The boys soccer team sealed their chance to advance to the state title game Saturday with a 3-1 win Tuesday night at Wren. With almost 24 minutes to play in the first half, Conner Hubbard gave the Eagles their first point. Conner Hubbard scores at 23:58 of 1st half to give Eastside a 1-0 lead over Wren. Stephen Henderson would score the next goal, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead going into the second half. With 23 minutes left to play in the second half, the Eagles would score a third time. Wren would score only once against the Eagles' keeper, but it would be the team's only goal in the game. Eastside will face Hilton Head at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Gilbert for the 3A state championship game.
