Coach Young: Seneca Game Will Be a Challenge For Greer

Seneca's defensive lineman are bigger but Greer has speed on its side this year.

This year's Greer High School football team is “pretty special,” according to Head Football Coach Will Young.

“We've got some of the most talented, skilled kids that we've had in the last 10 years,” Young said.

Young spoke to members of the Greer Touchdown Club Thursday afternoon.

“All of our wide receivers, all of our secondary kids, tons of speed, speed everywhere you look,” he said. “It makes it fun, it really does. We are fairly young up front but we're athletic. Our kids we'll have playing on the offensive line are very athletic. They've all got the chance to be a very good offensive line in the future.”

He said he hopes to reduce the number of yards rushed this season and give more time to a throwing game.

He said the team's defensive line “has to be the biggest improvement we've had since last May to now.”

“Ty Campbell, Raymond Booker, Marquis Lyles, kids like that whose names you'll hear, have really come a long way,” Young said.

“We hired a new defensive line coach, Rashaad Jackson,” he said.

A native of Union County, Jackson played for Clemson and played for the St. Louis Chargers as a free agent.

“He really does a great job with those kids,” Young said. “Those kids, all 11 of them can flat out fly. That's a wonderful thing to watch when you're head coach, it really is.

Greer plays at Seneca tonight.

“If you know anything about (Seneca Head Coach) Wayne Green, you don't know much about him,” Young said. “I'll be completely honest with you, you're not real sure what you're going to get when you go play him, particularly on Week 1.”

“I think we've covered everything, but with Wayne you never know,” Young continued. “He's got a sophomore class, so here in about a year or two, you'll hear a lot about Seneca. His sophomore class is phenomenal - really, really good, bunch of big kids, bunch of kids who can run.”

Seneca's defensive line is “a lot bigger” than the fronts the Yellow Jackets have faced in the preseason, Young said.

“One of their sophomores is a 6'3”, 290-lb kid, his name is Nike Diggs,” he said. “You'll hear about him in a couple of years. He has a chance to be a great player down the road."

He said the Seneca game will be a big challenge.

“Anytime we play Wayne, it's always fun, it's always exciting,” Young said.
