Byrnes Takes on Woodruff Tonight

An off week last week gave the Rebels extra time to prepare for the Wolverines.

An off week last week allowed the Byrnes High School Rebels to get back to fundamentals, Head Football Coach Bobby Bentley said.

Bentley gave members of the Greer Touchdown Club a preview of tonight’s game against Woodruff.

“We defeated Open 52-0,” Bentley said with a smile. “Open didn’t score. Open really struggled. “

He said it was good to have an open week in the high school football schedule.

“We gave the guys off Friday, then we came in Monday,” Byrnes said.

This week’s heat was a change, Bentley said.

“We missed the heat in the camp, so this week it was good to make us a little tougher,” he said. “It was a good week and a half of practice, preparing for Woodruff. Woodruff’s a good team. There’s a big rivalry history between the two programs.

“Woodruff looked great against Gaffney offensively,” Bentley said. “That has us concerned, and then you watch them against another team, and they don’t look as good. So it kind of worries me a little bit, which team will show up.  I know (Woodruff Head Football Coach) Brian (Lane) will have those guys ready.

“They’ve got a receiver …Blake Bone, he’s as good as you’ll find,” he continued. “He’s about 6’4”, 6’5”. He can really run. He’s already committed to the University of Kentucky. He’s a really good player.

“They like to pack the box a lot, like to play a lot of man coverage, so hope we can pass protect and hopefully we can throw the ball around a little bit and have a good game,” Bentley said. “It’s at home and hopefully we’ll have a good showing.”
