Byrnes' Jake Bentley Should Return for 2014 Season After Knee Injury

Rebels Head Football Coach Bobby Bentley, Jake's father, said physician confident ACL tear will heal clean.

Byrnes High School freshman quarterback Jake Bentley is recovering from knee surgery.

Jake's father, Byrnes High School Head Football Coach Bobby Bentley, updated members of the Greer Touchdown Club on his son's recovery Thursday. Jake torn the ACL in his right knee during the game against Apopka, Fla. last Saturday.

“Jake had a little speed bump Saturday, tearing his knee again,” Bentley said. “That's been frustrating because you see the talent – Auburn's already offered him and Clemson and App State, just knowing that as a freshman, he's got so much potential. But that's what football teaches us – it's not going to be easy.”

Jake is home from Florida, where orthopedic surgeon Dr. Andrews performed the knee surgery.

“Dr. Andrews assures us he's going to be fine,” Bentley said. “Dr. Andrews said it's going to be very clean, it's going to be tight, so he feels good about it.”

“The injury previously was tough because his growth plates were open, so they had to be careful going in there and working with it,” Bobby Bentley said. “I'm here to say that his growth plates are closed now at 6'4”, 210lbs. I'm kind of glad of that because he may grow himself out of quarterback. His growth plates are closed and they can drill in there and secure the ligament a lot better with the growth plate being closed.”

Bobby Bentley told the Greenville News Wednesday that Dr. Andrews believes Bentley will return “full speed” for the 2014 football season.

Byrnes had a buy week Friday. They'll play Woodruff at home on Friday, Sept. 6.
