Blue Ridge High School Faces J.L. Mann Tonight

BRHS Head Football Coach Shane Clark says J.L. Mann will pose a challenge to the Fighting Tigers' offense.

The Blue Ridge High School Fighting Tigers beat Wade Hampton 42-21 last week and are ready for Week Two.

Clark spoke to members of the Greer Touchdown Club Thursday about last week’s game.

“We did what we felt like we had to do,” Clark said of the game against Wade Hampton. “We came out, tried to set a tone offensively. We had five scoring drives under two minutes, which is what we’re trying to accomplish. It’s a testament to our offensive line.  We had a great job by several running backs.”

One of those running backs, Vonta Jenkins, was named the Greer Touchdown Club’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Jenkins averaged 13.5 yard per carry against Wade Hampton.

“We felt like we had a very good job with the offensive line up front, getting those guys to move the ball,” Clark said. “We felt like we made some good adjustments at the half defensively to shut Wade Hampton down in the second half. They’ve got a strong team, a very good group of running backs, senior running backs they have there, that ran the ball very hard against us. We felt like we were in a little better shape the second half.”

Tonight, the Fighting Tigers face J.L. Mann.

“Another 4A team for us, maybe not quite the J.L. Mann of the past right here, but they’re still a good group of athletes, ” Clark said. “I know Coach Watson, defensively, he’ll have somebody coming on every play right here, at least from one angle, if not two or three, so it will be a challenge for us offensively.

“Defensively, we’re going to have to play well,” he continued. “They’re trying to get some things going in their passing game that’s a little bit different for them from what they’ve done in the past. But if our guys perform, we’re expected to win and that’s what we’re going to try to do.”
