GALLERY: Taylors Elementary Celebrates Reading On Dr. Seuss' Birthday

Read Across America day coincides with the birthday of the late children's book author, Theodore Geisel.

Students at Taylors Elementary School spent this school week learning about and celebrating the legacy of Dr. Seuss, the legendary author of numerous illustrated children's books that remain favorites of young people decades after their publication.

Regina Hudson, 5K teacher at Taylors, said her children have focused on Dr. Seuss frequently over the last several days.

"We wore crazy socks, we talked about rhyming words this week, we've listened to some of his books, read some books, and we've talked about Dr. Seuss' birthday," Hudson said.

"We also just took some time to talk about who he was," she added.

Theodore Geisel, born on March 2, 1904, frequently used the pseudonym Dr. Seuss while penning children's classics such as "Green Eggs and Ham," "The Cat In the Hat" and "Horton Hears a Who!" His unique style, which used an upbeat, rapid poetic meter, frequent rhymes and nonsensical words drew children to his work, and by the time of his death in 1991, Geisel's pen name became synonymous for children's literacy. Most of his most popular works were written in the 1950's and 1960's.

"I think the kids love the rhyes and the nonsense words, and the pictures," said kindergarten teacher Jennie Burtner. "They're easy to read - they've been popular throughout the ages."

Burtner's class also took part in celebrating Dr. Seuss and reading itself by reading his books, making their own paper "Cat In The Hat" style hats and watching a video on the writer.

Kindergarten student David Geer said he had something in common with Dr. Seuss.

"My favoite Dr. Seuss book is Cat In The Hat," Geer said as he clutched a Cat In The Hat stuffed figure.

"My birthday is March 1. Dr. Seuss' is March 2."

Kindergarten students at Taylors also joined with third grade "book buddies" Friday to join in reading some of Dr. Seuss' books.
