"Return to Camp Sevier" honored veterans at the site of what used to be one of the largest military installations in the nation.

Hundreds of students, parents and former military personnel packed the gym at Sevier Middle School on Friday to recognize the service of America's veterans in a ceremony held just three days before Veterans Day.

The "Return to Camp Sevier" Veterans Day Memorial Service was seen as appropriate to many attendees, as Sevier Middle School sits on the site of the former Camp Sevier, which was an army training camp built near the end of World War I. More than 100,000 soldiers, including the 30th "Old Hickory" Division, trained there.

Camp Sevier spanned some 2,000 acres from Wade Hampton Boulevard to State Park Road and from Mountain Creek Church Road to Reid School Road - with the current site of Sevier Middle School sitting in the middle.

Friday's ceremony recognized veterans in attendance, and included the posting of the colors by the Wade Hampton High School Junior ROTC, and performances by Sevier's band and chorus.
