Reece's Petition Drive Eclipses 2,000 Signatures

Tommie Reece, who is trying to get on the ballot in November's general election, needs several hundred more signatures.

Tommie Reece can see the light at the end of the tunnel in her petition drive to get on the ballot in November. The question is if she'll reach the end of the tunnel in time.

Reece, who was once on the ballot in the GOP primary race for the Senate 6 seat currently held by Mike Fair, was kicked off the ballot just three days before the June 12 primary because she hadn't filed her statement of economic interest form at the exact same time she declared her candidacy.

Reece said Thursday that the petition drive had collected more than 2,000 signatures. She'll need 2,949 signatures turned into the South Carolina Election Commission's offices in Columbia by noon Monday if she is to get on the ballot in November.

Hundreds of other candidates across the state suffered a similar fate after the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that those who did not file the paperwork simultaneously could not be certified, even though in many cases the candidates simply filed in the manner told to them by local election officials.

"We know we've gotten past the 2,000 mark, but how far past it, we don't know for sure because we've been focusing our efforts one encouraging people to sign the petition, making phone calls, rather than counting what has come in the mail," Reece said.

Reece said most people she's encountered have been open to signing the document, but that it's a struggle to actually get face time with potential signees.

"We feel like we've been really successful, but its really hard to reach people," Reece said. "We've had some neighborhoods where people come to the door and that's great, but in other areas, it clearly appears people are home, and they just don't come to the door. That may just be a function of the times, unfortunately."

"Ninety-nine percent of the people we've asked to sign it, sign it," Reece added. "It's a matter of getting in front of that person, getting that contact."
