Jesse Jackson Jr. to Resign from Congress

Jackson, the son of Greenville native and civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson, has been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. will announce his resignation from Congress Wednesday.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Jackson's brother, Jonathan Jackson said that his brother would resign via a letter to House Speaker John Boehner.

Jackson, 47, has been treated for bipolar depression and has been on a medical leave from Congress since June. Jackson, son of Greenville native Rev. Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader, and the husband of Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, has been under investigation by federal authorities for alleged misuse of campaign dollars.

Jackson won re-election on Nov. 6 to another two-year term in the House by defeating a Republican and independent challenger, according to the Chicago Tribune story. Under Illinois law, Gov. Pat Quinn, a fellow Democrat, would call a special election to fill Jackson’s 2nd District congressional seat.
