The South Carolina Senate is guaranteed to introduce a new member after today, as Republican incumbent Phillip Shoopman has dropped out of the Senate 5 race for re-election, leaving Amanda Somers, a Greer business woman, to be the only GOP candidate standing. But when SCGOP Chairman Chad Connelly re-opened filing after Shoopman's announcement, Rep. Tom Corbin of Travelers Rest entered the fray. Wyatt Miler of Greer has dropped out of the race because he was de-certified due to improperly filing his statement of economic interest.

The Senate District 6 race pits an entrenched incumbent against two Republican challengers. Mike Fair, who previously served in the state House for 10 years, has been representing District 6 in the Senate now since 1996. Now he'll face Chris Sullivan, a well-known Republican campaigner and advisor. Tommie Reece, a Greenville County School Board member, is likely to put together a petition drive to get her name on the ballot in November because a U.S. District Court refused to order he back on the ballot after she did not file a statement of economic interest at the same time she filed to run for the seat.

At the county council level, incumbent Sid Cates faces competition from Scott Stephens for the District 20 seat. Cates comes from an education background, having been the Principal of Bob Jones Academy in the Wade Hampton area of Greenville, while Stephens comes from a business background, as the owner of Camille's Sidewalk Cafe in Greenville.

In the District 22 race at the county council level, Jenn Webb, a Lockheed Martin employee, is running against Bob Taylor an incumbent who has been on the Greenville County Council for the last 12 years.
