Only One Perished On S.C. Roadways Over Holiday Weekend

More than 200 DUI arrests were made by the South Carolina Highway Patrol as they cracked down on dangerous driving during the Labor Day weekend.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported this week that the recent Labor Day weekend yielded only one fatal accident statewide. That's a significant drop compared to the seven deaths reported on state roads over the holiday period last year.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol saturated the roadways to ensure safer travel for motorists during the high traffic period. The result of the high law enforcement presence resulted in 260 DUI arrests statewide, and a total of 8,633 cases made.

Troopers also issued more than 3,000 seat belt citations, investigated 738 collisions and assisted 1,086 motorists across South Carolina.

Meanwhile, the State Transport Police performed 234 commercial vehicle and driver inspections, with 21 vehicles placed out of service and 12 drivers placed out of service.

“These statistics prove that high visibility, proactive enforcement and education are saving lives," said Leroy Smith, director of the SCPDS. "This is encouraging news to our officers as we continue our efforts to reduce fatalities and collisions in our state.”
