Mother Of Drowning Victim Charged

Marian Stringer charged with homicide by neglect for failing to care for child, while also drinking while alone with her three children at a Seabury Drive pool.

A 36-year-old mother has been arrested and charged with homicide by neglect after her 3-year-old of a Seabury Drive home.

Laura Campbell, public information officer for the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said that Stringer was with her three children at the pool area of 204 Seabury Drive on Greenville's east side when she reportedly went inside for a moment with her children still out of the house. When she returned, her three-year-old child had fallen in the pool and drowned. The incident occurred at 3:45 p.m. The child was declared dead at the hospital by 5 p.m.

"Once deputies arrived at the incident location, the child was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased," Campbell said. "A death investigation was launched and as the result of that investigation, the victim’s mother, 36-year old Marian Brownfield Stringer, was arrested and charged with homicide by neglect. As the arrest warrant states, the child was under Mrs. Stringer’s care.  Mrs. Stringer failed to appropriately watch the child and her neglect caused the child’s death.  The arrest warrant further states that Mrs. Stringer had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from her person."
