Law Enforcement Torch Run Leaves Greenville Thursday

The run will leave from Greenville County Law Enforcement Center at 5 a.m. and will arrive in Columbia at noon Friday for a special ceremony at the South Carolina Statehouse.

Greenville County law enforcement officers are carrying the torch for Special Olympics.

Officers will leave at 5 a.m. Thursday from the parking area of the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center and will run the torch more than 106 miles to Columbia to help open the Special Olympic's summer games.

Officers from Greenville, along with fellow law enforcement officers from throughout the state, will arrive in Columbia at noon Friday for a press conference on the steps of the South Carolina Statehouse.

Each team will then run the “Flame of Hope” torch to Fort Jackson for the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics at 6 p.m. Friday.

Each year the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, Greenville Police Department and the South Carolina Highway Patrol work together to raise money for Special Olympics. Last year, the community helped the officers to raise more than $21,500 during their "Cops on Top of a Doughnut Shop” event.
