Coroner's office receives toxicology report on dead Wofford student

Randall Heffron Jr., Mount Pleasant tennis standout, died Sept. 10

The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office confirmed on Friday that it has received a completed toxicology report in the case of Randall Heffron Jr., the 20-year-old Wofford College student who died earlier in the month.

Heffron, a tennis player at Wofford, was eating with friends late in the evening on Sept. 9 when he left the room and walked to the dormitory's bathroom in distress. He was found in the bathroom in need of medical attention, according to school officials.

Spartanburg County Coroner Clevenger said on Friday that his office had received the toxicology results, but that he was not ready to release them.

"The toxicology is now back, but the pathologist has not yet rendered an opinion based on both the toxicology and the autopsy," Clevenger said.

Heffron, who made a name for himself as a standout tennis player at Bishop England in the Lowcountry, was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:11 a.m. on Sept. 10.

Clevenger has acknowledged that there were reports that Heffron and his friends had been drinking that night, but cautioned that those reports had not yet been confirmed.

Clevenger said that even if they had consumed alcohol, only the toxicology report, coupled with the autopsy results can show what, if any, factor alcohol may have played in the student's death.

Clevenger said he anticipated the pathologist would provide that opinion sometime next week. When asked whether or not the toxicology report did indicate any alcohol consumption, regardless of whether it contributed to Heffron's death, Clevenger declined to answer.

"I'm going to wait until the pathologist gives his opinion before I provide a statement on that," Clevenger said.

Wofford College held a memorial service for Heffron on Thursday, where a scholarship fund in his memory was announced.
