SC Hacked Awareness Silent Vigil

A year ago a cyber thief hacked into the SC Department of Revenue gaining access to the personal and financial date of 3.8 million individual taxpayers, 1.9 million of their dependents, 699,900 businesses, 3.3 million bank accounts and 387,000 credit/debit card numbers.
Investigating the crime and providing credit and ID protection to millions of South Carolina taxpayers has cost the state more than $21 million thus far. The documents held by the SC Department of Revenue were not encrypted as recommended by cyber security experts. The hacking of the SC Department of Revenue was made known to Governor Nikki Haley in early October 2012 but was not revealed to the public for another two weeks.

The SC Democratic Party is holding a series of public events this week to draw attention to the hacking scandal and the handling of the crime by the Haley administration.

A SC Hacked Awareness vigil will be held Wednesday, October 23rd at 10:30am at the entrance to Falls Park at the intersection of Camperdown Way and South Main Street in downtown Greenville.
