Eastside YMCA Membership Skyrockets

The first month of 2013 saw the addition of more than 1,000 members.

If you've noticed that it's been a bit crowded at the Eastside YMCA lately, don't worry - you're not imagining things.

The Eastside Y is hopping with activity, as Executive Director Zack Hall confirmed to Patch that an annual January promotion that exempts new members from paying the Y's usual start-up fee has seen huge results.

"We saw 518 new membership units, but that can be an entire family, it can be an adult, it can be a couple," Hall said. "We got close to 1,100 actual new Y members."

The Eastside YMCA now boasts a membership of more than 8,000, a number that will only grow if a recent pattern continues.

"The last few years we've really grown," Hall said. "I want to say we've grown about 15 percent over the last three years. It's significant growth. We have to make sure we're offering programming at peak time and non-peak times (to reduce congestion at the facility), and make sure our members know about it."

Hall said the busiest peak times at the Eastside facility is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
