A few weeks ago, if you'd asked any knowledgable, working musician around town looking to record a demo, EP or full-length album, they probably would have told you Whitestone Studios was "out of your league."

Just like that table full of beat, college broads across from me in this Pelham Road Starbucks. Maybe if I just explain to them that I'm a hyper-local blogger, they'll just *snap* and bum-rush me, tearing the buttons off this double-breasted cowboy shirt with their teeth...

Unnatural digression. Where were we?

Ah, yes. I spoke with Noel Golden, the president of Whitestone Studios, on this subject just the other day. Golden's a veteran heavyweight in the music business, having worked with Willie Nelson, Matchbox Twenty and Slash (Guns N' Roses), among others, and set up his top-tier studio in downtown Greenville back in 2005.

Having recorded at Whitestone on numerous occasions, I know firsthand the high grade equipment and top-notch personnel they boast. Marcus Suarez, in-house engineer and producer, is as talented as they come. And all of Golden's gold records plastered on the walls make a statement in themselves. But sometimes, that kind of class and high-dollar, high-end equipment comes with a steeper price tag.

Not so much anymore. Maybe it's part adjusting with the economic times, maybe it's part giving back to musical community -- whatever it is, Whitestone's making some changes.

"We're throwing the rate book out the window," Golden said. "Give us a budget, and we'll give you a recording."

Now's the time. If you're a band or artist looking to record a few songs, or even a full-length album, hey, I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask. While no specific rates were named (hence the heaving the rate book out the window), Golden said that all inquiries and budgets are being taken.
