During a Taylors Town Square meeting residents talked about the community’s strengths, as well as its weaknesses.
Remember this song lyric? "It only takes a spark to get a fire going." A group of Taylors residents, community members and businesses are gathering together each month to get the conversation started about not only revitalizing Taylors, but bettering the community. Delores Eanes lives on Main Street and attended her first meeting Wednesday. She's hoping to make a difference in the town she's called home for at least 25 years. "I'd like to see businesses revitalized and more community events," Eanes said. "I love the small town feel, near a big city." Eanes sentiments were echoed by other residents gathered around tables at the Taylors Ministry Center, as they revisited "The Place" questionnaire. The exercise, designed to talk about the …

The Academy of the Arts, which sits behind the Presbyterian Theological Seminary, is a Christian theater operation that puts on several dramatic presentations each year. The above video was recently released to raise attention to its upcoming major project. "We named it 'Project Staples' because we wanted to create some curiosity in it," said Deborah Reimer, secretary at the academy. Staples, as it turns out, is the middle name of C.S. Lewis (Clive STAPLES Lewis), and Project Staples will be The Academy of the Arts' rendition of the famous play "The Lion, The Witch, The Wardrobe." The play will be a huge undertaking, and…

Gov. Haley has suggested that the agency be rolled up into the State Museum, but critics say it would mean the loss of jobs and federal grant money.
Last year Gov. Nikki Haley de-funded the South Carolina Arts Commission when she vetoed its funding in the budget, saying it had bloated administrative expenses. At the time, Haley said that while she appreciated the importance of the arts, its funding was not one of the core functions of government. A massive protest at the Statehouse followed. Both the House and Senate overrode the governor's veto and the Commission was saved. This year, another fight looms. In her executive budget proposal, Haley has suggested the Commission be rolled into the operations of the State Museum, which would eliminate the position of Executive Director while keeping the grants program intact. One of the main functions of the Commission is to give grant money…

To expound a little on what I said, I see two things happening in the patterns of life in Taylors. I see many of the local residents going to other parts of the county for much of their needs, and I see a large volume of traffic passing through Taylors on Wade Hampton and not stopping much. I think we need to up our game to keep more of those residents' dollars local, and in the process we should…   more ›
