Tobias To Challenge Gowdy For Congressional Seat

Jimmy Tobias announces his candidacy Monday.

Local businessman Jimmy Tobias, 57, has officially filed to run for South Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District seat currently held by Trey Gowdy. Running as a Democrat, he cites extreme frustration with proposed changes in Social Security and Medicare, which Gowdy supports, as one of the main reasons for his run for office.

“I do not believe it’s right to take away the security that people have worked for all their lives. I am running to stand up for the working man and their children. There are too many radical Republicans trying to take away the benefits we’ve worked so hard for because of the greed of others,” Tobias said.

Additional elements of Tobias’ platform include support of the Affordable Health Care Act, reducing national debt, and the legalization of marijuana.

“Trey has been very quiet since he was elected to the 4th District. We don’t need someone who is quiet and following others, we need a leader. I am that leader,” said Tobias.

As a citizen of the 4th District, I would respectfully ask Mr. Tobias to cite specifically where any Republican has publicly proclaimed the intention to take away anyone's benefits. Many Republicans have proposed ideas to address the very real systemic problems with social security.

Does Mr. Tobias intend to offer any real, concrete ideas?

Every Republican in Congress has knelt to Tea Party pressure, cowered and endorsed the Ryan plan which calls for a radical redistribution of resources from the broad majority of Americans to the nation’s wealthiest individuals. It provides the largest tax cuts in history for the wealthy, raises taxes on the middle class, ends guaranteed Medicare benefits, erodes health care coverage, partially privatizes Social Security, and makes deep cuts in guaranteed Social Security benefits.
