Greenville Fireworks Display Considered A 'Dud' By Many

City of Greenville apologizes when some of the fireworks fail to ignite.

Thousands of people took to downtown Greenville on Wednesday to celebrate Independence Day, but the city's annual July 4th fireworks show didn't exactly leave many in the crowd inspired.

WYFF reports that the City of Greenville officially apologized Thursday for the lackluster show, which seemed to arbitrarily end without any grand finale.

“There is no one more disappointed than the City staff, sponsors and hundreds of volunteers who came together to produce this event," said Angie Prosser, Angie Prosser, Greenville’s director of public information and events.

"We recognize that this was not up to the standards of the Greenville community and hope this will not deter you from attending future City events. It was unfortunate and we are so very disappointed too,” she added.

The problem, according to the city, is that Table Rock Pyrotechnic and the Zambelli Company - which had been contracted by the city for the first time to do this year's show - had equipment malfunction, leaving undischarged fireworks.

"The radio station that was broadcasting the music had a countdown to the start and then started their music," recalled Taylors Patch reader Sharyn Pittman on Facebook."Problem was that the fireworks started five minutes after the countdown (it was from 10). Also, the fireworks just seemed to end abruptly without a grand finale. Everyone watching around us kept saying 'its not over, its not over,' but it was."
