Analysis: DeMint's Lack of Enthusiasm Speaks Volumes

Candidates in need of a boost will have to look elsewhere

With multiple media outlets reporting that Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., will probably not be endorsing a Republican candidate for president, the most coveted endorsement in the state — if not the country — is no longer to be had.

The news undoubtedly comes as a disappointment to a field that is in need of a spark.

DeMint’s unwillingness to offer an endorsement is another sign of the lack of enthusiasm for any of these candidates, said Jeri Cabot, an adjunct professor of political science at the College of Charleston.

DeMint endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in 2008, but has said this year that he believes he may have committed to a candidate too early and told his supporters to "keep their powder dry" until the right conservative came along.

Romney, who is reported to have met with DeMint last week, could have used the boost, but considering polls show him well ahead in New Hampshire and competitive in other early primary states such as Nevada and Florida, he is not in need of it as are some others.

Plus, DeMint’s support in 2008 primary only got Romney a fourth-place finish in South Carolina.

Georgia businessman Herman Cain, the nominal frontrunner, could have used DeMint’s endorsement if for no other reason than to change the topic from the sexual harassment charges that are currently plaguing him. Cain appears to be in the type of freefall that has beset earlier frontrunners like U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

The candidate who seemed most aligned with DeMint — at least when he first declared his candidacy — was Perry. But Perry’s fall from favor since announcing in August has been profound. After leading the Palmetto State in late summer, the latest polls have him in single-digits.

It’s true Perry passed on DeMint’s Labor Day Freedom Forum, but experts Patch spoke to believe that played no bearing in DeMint’s decision (Perry had to back out on short notice after his home state of Texas was overcome with wildfires).

It is possible that DeMint simply believes that Perry is neither the best conservative nor has the best chance to win.

That said, the candidate who could have benefited the most from a DeMint endorsement might have been Newt Gingrich. The former House Speaker has been steadily improving in polls in South Carolina and the support of a favorite son like DeMint might have been the shot in the arm his campaign needed.

Still, it might just come to policy rather than pure politics, according to consultant Taft Matney.

“Whether it’s healthcare, abortion, or immigration, a number of conservatives still feel their candidate isn’t out there yet,” Matney said. “Jim DeMint may very well be feeling the same way.”

It was during the last election cycle in 2010 that DeMint’s power came to fruition.

His Senate Conservatives Fund raised millions for what were thought to be longshot candidates. Some of those candidates ended up winning, such as Rand Paul in Kentucky, Marco Rubio in Florida, and Mike Lee in Utah. But, some of them lost, too.

Longtime political consultant Chip Felkel believes those losses played a factor in DeMint’s decision not to endorse one of the candidates back in the pack such as Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania or Bachmann.

“He does not want to be thought of as someone who only cares about ideology and not about winning,” Felkel said. “And he just might think he can do more long term good at the Senate and state level.”

Like Felkel, Spartanburg County Tea Party organizer Karen Martin believes that DeMint wants to expand on the success of the Senate Conservatives Fund.

“He understands his position and leading from the outside,” Martin said.

Just because DeMint is sitting out this go-round doesn’t mean he will again in 2016. Quite the contrary. Martin believes that should Romney win the nomination, DeMint will throw his support behind an up-and-coming conservative like Rubio or Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan.

Martin is not completely convinced DeMint will stay on the sidelines.

“He left himself a little wiggle room by saying that if one candidate is clearly more conservative he would support that candidate,” she said.

But for now, DeMint has stepped aside. Which allowed the speculation to continue on which candidate will garner Gov. Nikki Haley’s endorsement.

Romneycare passed in 2006 and DeMint endorsed Romney in 2008 when Romneycare was still considered a political asset. Now that Romneycare is considered a political liability, Romney continues to stand behind it as a reasonable state-based solution (though he would repeal the national monstrosity Obamacare)while DeMint refuses to repeat his endorsement. Now, tell me again, who is supposed to be the flip-flopper?

It was the Republican party that initially endorsed mandatory insurance! They know that you cannot have comprehensive health reform without the individual mandate! And you cannot have 30 states doing it and 20 not doing it!

"Anything that gives illegals an incentive is wrong". The country are screwed for other reasons like this kind of thinking. Those children did nothing wrong and they are being punished because of their parent's sins. Would you prefer having them in gangs and not in college? Don't you want them to succeed and contribute?. They are Americans in every way, just without papers. I don't know if you are a Christian or not, but it clearly says: "be kind to strangers". What this country needs is a comprehensive immigration reform and send those who have committed a crime back home. The other ones, the hard working ones such as the ones that pick the food that we eat, legalize them and help their children to continue to build this great country. After that you can close the door.

Harry, actually, Texas does not give reduced college education to illegal immigrants. In the state of Texas, if you attend a Texas high school for 3 years, regardless of whether your parents brought you into the state illegally or not, you PAY the same college tuition as every other graduate of a Texas high school. This is no "incentive" or special benefit for illegal immigrant. This is merely not punishing an innocent person for the crimes of their parents. These students had no say over whether they grew up in Dallas or Mexico City. All these students did was do well in school and aim to get a higher education so they can be productive members of society. Punishing them for the actions of their parents is wrong. Also, I believe they also must go through the legal process of becoming a legal resident of the US, now that they are adults.

I agree with Eric. If looking for a better future for your family makes someone a "criminal", then punish them just like if they have killed someone. Put them in the same category. Yes, they broke the law, but the nation is not failing because of that. Is so easy to blame the ones who can't defend themselves. Look close why the nation is failing...

Also, your daughter paid out of state tuition to a North Carolina college because she went to high school somewhere other than North Carolina, right? These students graduated from Texas high schools, so they PAY the same thing as the other graduates from the same high school.

Joe, sorry, but you are focused on the wrong person. The parents should be held responsible for their crime. In the case of the illegal immigrant, deport them or punish them in some other way and in the bank robber, incarcerate the bank robber. You would not put the children of the bank robber in jail too, would you?
You are also assuming that the illegal immigrant parents of these students are paying their tuition. In many cases the students are paying their own tuition.

Joe, what "in state tuition" problem are you referring to? There has been "in state tuition" for years. The idea is that graduates of state high schools pay a lower price than students from other states. This is not a funding issue, actually it is not even an illegal immigrant issue. In order to go to college, the student has to get funding, loans, grants, scholarships and other sources of money, there is nothing about illegal immigrants.

Joe, if in your scenario, the bank robbers paid their kids college tuition, you would not be able to get it back. Sorry, your scenario breaks down.

As far as these students paying for college, they are paying college the same way their fellow graduates are paying for it, grants, scholarships, loans and money from parents and working for it. Again, these kids did nothing wrong and they are trying to do the right thing.

Joe, I agree there are a number of problems related to illegal immigrants and we need to address them. This, however, is not one of them. It would not make a difference if there were 50 college students in Texas going to college with in state tuition or there were 5 million. Actually, if there were 5 million, the colleges would make lots of money and there would be loads of well educated folks in our society. Also, these students are the people who had nothing to do with being here illegally and they are doing what we tell everyone to do, get a good education, be a part of our society. These kids aren't demanding Spanish be spoken everywhere, they speak great English. These kids are doing the right thing and I'm not suggesting they get anything special. I'm just saying we don't punish them for something their parents did and we should not punish them for doing what we think should be done.

Just to be clear, Gov. Perry did not "open his mouth." He was asked a question about how Texas does something and he answered it.

Also, there are 13 states right now that do not CHARGE graduates of their state's high schools more to go to college in their state because of the actions of their parents.

During the 20th century, the Dow Jones industrial average rose on the average 7.3% under GOP presidents...under DEM presidents 10.3%...the difference in the increase under DEMs and GOPs amounts to 41% increase in net worth to investors.

so in addition to social security, medicare, the DEM also looked after the 1%...in general the economy does better under DEM administration than under GOPs.

These writers are oblivious to the fact that neither Perry nor Romney nor Ryan nor Rubio nor Gingrich nor Cain are Conservatives. Perry ran Al Gore's Campaign in Texas in 2000. That's not a Conservative! He signed the first DREAM Act Amnesty, hardly the mark of a Conservative! Cain is a shill for big business, is shielding his liberal, Obama-voting wife from the media, believes in "a pathway to citizenship" for illegal aliens and will soon be in freefall. That's not a Conservative! Gingrich is an Open Borders, pro-Amnesty CFR globalist who gave us NAFTA and GATT that cost millions of American jobs! He left both his wives for other women while they had cancer, hardly the mark of a Conservative! "Mr. 1%er" Santorum gets an "F" from NumbersUSA on Immigration votes, hardly the mark of a Conservative!
